Where is me?
Individuality, personal touch, preservation of memories, sentimental values, familiarity.
The challenge with interior design is to ensure three things:
- The home does not become the designer’s viewpoint only
- It takes into account the owner’s lifestyles and usage of the space (Practicality)
- It incorporates sentimental pieces / legacy pieces that the owner holds dear
Sentimental value pieces / Legacy pieces / Pieces of personal attachment are integral to a person’s sense of belonging and they create an intimate & familiar space for them.
They are, essentially, a part of design.
Once we understand this, design revolves around this understanding. Effective design Incorporates, includes, immerses and imbeds. Creates congruence, gels it all together and makes it seem like these pieces were selected to create harmony and balance.
It is a sublime achievement, given its emotional nature.
Sometimes the designer’s vision is so strong, it does not take into account the customers lifestyle or personal touch and the client ends up asking “I like what I see, but, where is me?”
To blend the designer’s vision and yet, keep the owners quirks/sentiments/lifestyle/balance, IS, successful design.
Friends and visitors must be able to see something of you (The owner) in your home.
Words like Storyline, Accentuate, Focal point, Bespoke, Customized, Color palette, Structural elements, Harmonize, Design integrity, Turnkey solutions, Aesthetics etc. may be used extensively, but the end result is spot-on only if the “Where is me” is addressed
